No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
