Powerful Winds Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to remain inside as severe gales batter the nation.

Powerful gusts hitting speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 homes experiencing outages and compelled officials to cancel in excess of 100 aircraft departures, as reported by regional news sources.

These gusts are influencing the complete South Island and southern sections of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced infrequent red wind warnings - the top caution category - in central regions such as Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been encouraged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Broad Destruction and Crisis Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences mainly in the South Island, while authorities say that energy was being restored progressively.

Regional news have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto oncoming traffic on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a incident that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Air travel in and out of the urban area have been cancelled as a result of the winds, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to support disaster response efforts.
