Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
